Why You Should join the panther pride band

High School band is a whole different animal from Jr. High. From football games to band trips to Mardi Gras parades, the experiences are worth every bit of time spent in rehearsals. On the first day of high school, you'll enter the doors knowing 100 people who will be in classes with you, have lunches with you, and help you with homework.

Aside from the day-to-day benefits of band, it also helps tremendously with college. Colleges like to see honors and AP classes, sure... but colleges also love to see a well-rounded student participating in an artistic endeavor and sticking with it, especially if that student rises to among the student leadership by their senior years. Students in the NHS Band have gone on to be admitted into prestigious honors colleges, such as at LSU, Northwestern State, UL-Lafayette, Southern Miss, Southeastern, and even into Ivy League schools. Colleges also offer scholarships for participating in band, even if you major in something other than music. On the low end of scholarships is LSU where band members earn $1000 a year, and some schools even offer free housing to band members, so all the years of practice and hard work can literally pay off!

Did you know?

The average NHS Band ACT score is more than 3 points higher than the school average? That's a HUGE difference!

Frequently Asked Questions

I've never marched before. Should I be nervous about joining band?

Nope! Most students enter high school without any marching experience. We'll teach you everything you need to know over the summer!

Can I do sports/JROTC/cheer/dance and band?

For most sports, yes. We have good relationships with the coaches and sponsors and try our best to share students. With that said, sometimes students will need to work harder to make up anything they've missed, but it has been done.

Are there school instruments available?

Instruments are available on a first-come first-served basis. There is a $50 per school year rental fee.

I play piano/strings/guitar/bass...can I be in marching band?

We always need piano players, and we can often utilize other talents, or use your current talents to shift you onto another instrument.

I'm not sure if I want to do band...what should I do?

Try it! First, freshman year is the time to find your niche. It's also the year you have the most time to try different things.

Band is unique in that we have summer rehearsals and camp, so you can try it out and decide if it's for you before school starts. If you get to the end of camp and decide it's not for you, we can change your schedule, no problem.
